HOW LOCKS WORK: The boat waits in bay 1 while bay 2 fills with water. When bay 2 is full Gate 1 is opened and boat moves into bay 2. Water is drained from bay 2 into bay 3 then gate 2 is opened and boat proceeds onwards.
