    It is from the Eyre family crest. The short story is that William Truelove lost his leg in the Battle of Hastings and afterwards William the Conqueror changed Truelove’s name to Eyre because William Truelove had helped him breathe during the battle by opening his mask on his suit of armor. The Eyre family owned the home many years.
